Nestled in the valleys of the Allegheny Front, Altoona, Pennsylvania was founded by the Pennsylvania Railroad and played a significant role in the manufacture of steam-powered rail in the middle of the 19th century. It played a pivotal role not only for manufacturing trains, but for ingenious solutions to raising rail up and over the mountains, including the world-famous Horseshoe Curve and other engineering marvels.
This 24-hour workshop will feature several excellent locations as we photograph the beautiful autumn colors in the western PA hills, the striking historic buildings of Altoona, and modern-day freight trains - from above and below, near and far, and often right beside them as they pass through both downtown Altoona and the Pennsylvania countryside.
You can take this workshop just for the locations (which are amazing) and for the subject matter. But we also hope to expand your creative toolbox, and to introduce new expressive elements into your photographs. Panning and other forms of camera movement, multiple exposures, panoramas, and long exposures are some of the techniques that we'll be practicing.
You are responsible for your hotel room and meals (and the $9 admission fee for the Horseshoe Curve). Our first location is in downtown Altoona, and we suggest you find a room here. (Altoona has many options for you to choose from.) We plan to have at least one group meal.
Additional notes: One of our locations can only be reached by climbing a long flight of stairs.
